Are your windows foggy, or is the siding rotted?
We’ve all been tempted to slap some duct tape on it and call it a day. However, tackling these pressing home projects now will prevent you from long-term mental and financial stress and your home from further damage.
A common question we get asked is, “Why would I replace my fogging window when I could just switch out the glass?”.
The answer is that many older window frames will not fit with new modern window sashes.
With vinyl window frames specifically, it is likely that they have warped out of square and will potentially create more issues even if you could find the exact sash for the space.
The main cause of this issue you’re facing isn’t the glass but rather the seal around the window.

Examples of window seal failure and older window damage.
Imagine investing your time and money into a project, and the problem isn’t fixed.
Instead, let’s avoid this situation and understand the root of the problem.
Over time, window seals can be damaged from wear, heat, or water. This causes the insulating gas to escape from the window sash. In older windows, the existing gas was air; in newer windows, several possible types of gas are present; the most popular would be Argon.
When the gas escapes, there is a requirement for displacement. This is where the ambient air is sucked back into the sash, along with all the moisture and dirt that is in the air. This dirt and moisture are what you see when the glass turns “foggy.”
When the seal is broken, the only way to solve the issue is by replacing the unit.
When the unit is removed, a new unit with proper sealing will be installed. This new seal will protect your windows from different elements.
Additionally, as technology has improved over the years, your new windows will likely be more energy-efficient than what you currently have installed. Not only will you be able to see out of your windows, but your wallet will also be thanking you.

Maybe your siding doesn’t “look great,” and you tell yourself you can wait a few more years before fixing it.
Though it may seem like a project that can wait, this may not necessarily be true.
If you are experiencing warping or rotting, there are many issues behind the surface that will cause you greater issues than just the aesthetic.
Warped siding can negatively impact your home’s energy efficiency in all seasons. Additionally, water can get in between gaps and lead to rotting.
A major problem with water is that it gets EVERYWHERE and is one of the biggest threats to your home.

Here are a few examples of what we’ve come across when siding issues are not addressed.
When left unchecked, water that gets behind your siding system can rot the siding, sheathing, and studs of your home.
In extreme cases, this can cause a serious and dangerous wall collapse, and in milder cases, we’ve seen problems with mold on the interior drywall.
Another result of rot is that it can also attract bugs and then, in turn, woodpeckers, leading to more damage.
Siding that is damaged from the sun and has faded can lower your curb appeal as well.

Each of these issues can negatively impact your home, ultimately lowering your return on investment.
There are many options available to revamp your siding.
Maybe you are in love with the way your home looks now, and if these issues hadn’t come up, you wouldn’t have changed a thing. In that case, find an installer you can trust and who has experience with the product.
